Abhijit Chowdhury

Dr Abhijit Chowdhury is a Professor and Chair of Hepatology at the Indian Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences, an initiative of the Liver Foundation West Bengal, India (www.iilds.in). A practicing physician, Professor Chowdhury has devoted over 25 years to public service and pursues an avid interest in population-based liver disease research and its relationship with other non-communicable diseases. He has published over 130 research papers and has contributed to book chapters on liver diseases and health systems. Prof. Chowdhury has strived to make healthcare accessible for the most vulnerable, including his advocacy for training informal healthcare providers to bridge the gaping holes in India’s healthcare system . His leadership in devising rural healthcare models for the underserved has garnered appreciation among global public health researchers. His skills as an organizer are expressed in building institutions that he has been associated with. Beyond his research, Prof. Chowdhury regularly contributes writings to popular media news publications on a breadth of social issues, and the evolving culture and values of healthcare practice in the region.
