Stephen was born in Bristol in 1933, the son of a carpenter. He won a scholarship to Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital School before studying medicine at Bristol University. After graduation he worked at Leeds General Hospital and then as a registrar at the National Heart Hospital in London.
