West Nile virus

More than 700 cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded across Europe so far this year, all locally acquired (Naturedoi.org/10.1038/d41586-024-03031-y). As it’s a mosquito borne disease, climate change seems the obvious culprit. Culex pipiens, the mosquito that transmits West Nile virus from infected birds to humans and other animals, has been native to Europe for centuries, however. The story behind the spread of West Nile Virus is complicated and, although climate change is an important part, changes in population density, agriculture, and patterns of travel are also involved (Nature Communicationsdoi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-45290-3).
