A man in his 40s presented with a six week history of a non-tender soft tissue mass (fig 1) of the right anterior upper thigh that was evident when he extended the knee on that side. His ability to walk was not affected.

Two weeks before he noticed the mass, he had experienced sudden pain in the anterior thigh when he kicked a ball while playing football. The pain was severe enough for him to quit the game, although he could still walk, albeit with difficulty.
