Peter was born in Cambridge and enjoyed an itinerant childhood because his father, Len, had a career in the Royal Air Force. Peter attended a number of schools across the country, spending the majority of his time at Ormskirk Grammar before deciding to study medicine at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 1975.
While completing his training in Grimsby and Hull hospitals, Peter met his future wife, Kameela, a Guyanese student nurse who had emigrated to the UK in 1971 on the coattails of the Windrush generation.
