Marie Louise (May) was born in Birkenhead, Liverpool, into a medical family. She was educated at Saint Helen and Saint Katherine school in Oxfordshire. Before entry to medical school, she experienced an eventful gap year travelling in New Zealand, Australia, and Asia.
