John gained a first class honours degree in chemistry, followed by a doctorate, before deciding to embark on a career in medicine. He enlisted with the army in order to fund his medical training at the University of Leeds, and qualified as a doctor in 1976.
After qualification he undertook GP training in the army, completing several years’ service, which included foreign tours. He joined Friar Gate Surgery in Derby as a partner in the early 1980s, then moved to Lister House Surgery, where he remained as a partner until his retirement 30 years later.
