Ronald Oliver was born in Bristol to Cuthbert and Cecilia Oliver, the youngest of their three children. His parents returned to London shortly after he was born, and his childhood was spent in Twickenham. After early schooling in Twickenham and Hampton, Ronald attended King’s College School, Wimbledon, from where he followed his older brother, Peter, into medicine. He studied at King’s College London and then St George’s Hospital.
