Charles was born in London and was evacuated to Biggin Hill during the second world war. He studied medicine at University College London, then worked on the house staff at University College Hospital (UCH) before joining the Royal Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine in 1955 with the rank of flight lieutenant.
