Peter was born in Bradford, where his father was a carpenter, and he had one sister, Anne. He attended school in Bradford, proceeding to medical school in Edinburgh, where he was a keen athlete. This remained an interest throughout his working life: he enjoyed orienteering and completed several marathons, including the London Marathon twice. He had many days on the Scottish hills with friends and climbed over 200 munros.
