Alexander Lister Forrest (Sandy) was the only son of William Forrest, a planning engineer, and Barbara Forrest (née Lister), and had a happy childhood.
After school in Leven and Edinburgh, he studied medicine at St Andrews, living in Hamilton Hall with views of the 18th hole of the Royal and Ancient’s famous Old Course. Sandy was a talented young single handicap golfer, but his passion for the game did not detract from his dedication to his studies. Decades later he would enjoy many happy rounds there with his close friends.
