Allan was born into a working class family in Liverpool in 1943, and his interest in medicine was piqued at the age of 13 after his father died of a heart attack. Allan’s excellent memory and keen numerical skills were nurtured at Liverpool Collegiate grammar school, and at the age of 17 he was admitted to the second year of medical school at the University of Liverpool. While there he met his future wife, Barbara, a student nurse, and two fellow medical students who would become lifelong friends, Timothy Dowson and Nicholas Clitherow.
