Extra 1500 GPs appointed in past six months under ARRS scheme

More than 1500 additional GPs have been recruited to England’s workforce in the past six months under the additional roles reimbursement scheme (ARRS), it has been announced, equating to 851 full time doctors.

Doctors’ leaders, however, have given a subdued welcome to news of the increase, saying there was a long way to go to ending workforce shortages in general practice.

The government said on 7 April that an additional 1503 GPs had been recruited in England since October last year through the ARRS scheme, which was opened up to doctors last year with a £82m funding allocation to allow primary care networks (PCNs) to hire GPs in 2024-25.
