Applications are invited from motivated and suitably qualified surgeons to join the Paediatric Surgery team at Leeds Childrens Hospital. We are seeking to employ 2 new consultant surgeons within the UGI/Thoracic sub specialist team.

One post will have an upper gastro intestinal surgery focus - looking after patients with congenital and acquired conditions. The successful candidate will be expected to have a specific interest in managing gastro oesophageal reflux and feeding solutions for the increasingly complex cohort of patients we care for. Advanced skills in interventional endoscopy and minimally invasive UGI surgery are required.

A second post will have a thoracic focus. This includes congenital and acquired thoracic problems. Experience in paediatric thoracic surgery, specifically lobectomy and minimally invasive thoracic surgery is required. This post will also include being part of the sub-specialist oesophageal atresia rota (1:3) in the longer term and will involve complex oesophageal atresia cases and oesophageal replacement surgery.

Both posts will cover General Paediatric Surgery and Neonatal Surgery.

Main duties of the job

The Leeds Childrens Hospital has an annual budget of £61 million, inpatient bed base of 286 beds, and delivers 56,000 outpatient appointments and 19,000 inpatient and day case episodes. The Leeds Childrens Hospital employs a total of 90 consultants providing general, specialist and supra-regional childrens medical and surgical services. Inpatient, day case and outpatient services are mainly provided at the LGI.

The successful applicant should possess MB BS/FRCS(or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To deliver care to patients with paediatric Thoracic and Upper GI conditions at the Leeds Childrens Hospital

Sub-specialty interest of Thoracic and Upper GI with specialist clinics and theatre lists for this purpose

Out-patient clinics - in Leeds and DGH around the region

Operative lists

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients on an on call 1:4.5

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings.

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Childrens Hospital and across the Trust.

To work with colleagues in Paediatric General Surgery to deliver acute on call. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.

To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Paediatric Surgery department.

The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.
